Meeting members
By Nick | PermalinkChris and I met up with BootsnAll members Chris Farthing and Rob Evans at the Lord Moon of the Mall in Whitehall today and shared multiple rounds of drinks.
The Lord Moon of the Mall is a JD Weatherspoon pub located about 40 yards from Traflagar Square. It is a spacious place and with no music actually allowed us to hear each other. The high ceilings suggested this building might of been a bank formerly.
Arriving at the pub at abour 3.30pm dressed in my BootsnAll hat and shirt I was interested to see who would turn up. Needless to say by bro was the first and we grabbed at table and some stools right in the middle in front of the bar.
I asked the duty manager if I could hang a BootsnAll sign up somewhere to direct members who might be arriving ( nobody ever having met before ). Unfortunately he said I could not even unroll my sign as it was ‘advertising’. The way things turned out the trusty BootsnAll hat came through with Chris Farthing noticing the logo and then reading the back url.
Chris had arrived that afternoon from a diving trip to the Red Sea ( he’s now in double figures….11 dives! ) and was at the EasyEverything cafe around the corner. Checking his mail he knew this was a too good to miss, and right he was. No sooner than he was introduced my bro got him going with a pint of London Pride, to match my Guinness and his Abbot Ale. Chris has travelled quite extensively in Central America as well as Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. We discussed Brandon’s Costa Rica section and Chris feels CR is the most developed and overpriced country in the region. Chris has in fact bought some property in Panama and we’ll be holding our future bbq’s there ( when he’s not around ).
Before long Rob Evans showed up and once again I was blown away by someone confessing they actually read our blog. Its incredible really and I was telling the guys that Sean, Chris, Ant and I were just 4 guys typing away in a little room in Eugene Oregon ( not exactly on the travellers circuit ). We discussed the kind of info and style our site has and how it can improve. Rob, a Welshman living in London is taking a year off from his job and doing volunteer work in Borneo, beofre heading up to Laos and Vietnam. This trip kicks off in April 2003.
After a couple of hours and some nachos we wrapped things up and I welcomed the guys to visit us in Bali.
Chris and I took the tube ( subway ) home and agreed it was a good time.

London seems a dark place. Dawn is around 8am, sundown around 3.30pm and plenty of solid cloud cover in between. Oh well its good for your skin I suppose.
I think living in a city heightens this feeling.
Actually this atmosphere will be perfect for the Jack the Ripper walk I’m doing with Philip Blazdell this evening.

Cheers to Nick for organising the evening, and cheers to Chris and Chris for also being there, I definitely had a good time, and will do my best to do some writing when I am on the road next year.
Good luck with Bali, hope to see you (and maybe a few other BnA folk) out there.
Rob

Nick,
Great that you got to meet Rob and Chris - all the pictures have this dark look to them - much like the pictures that we take here in Eugene during the winter - is it always dark and overcast there as well?
