Wheel of Fortune
By Nick | PermalinkDuring my trip downtown today I was checking out places for a BootsnAll get together and it all seemed a bit like Wheel of Fortune: would I find a place that was large enough, cosy enough, well located, easy to find, open, etc? I think I found a place that will work. It’s the Lord Moon of the Mall pub right off of Trafalgar Square. This place is easy to get to and to find (basically 30 yards down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square).
Here’s the address.

I reckon Saturday 28th Dec will work for most people and I’ll be there from 4pm onwards (they close at 11pm).
All travellers, locals, freaks and other camp followers welcome.
My first stop today was a cyber cafe in Wood Green, a multi-ethic neighborhood I used to work in. The connection speed was pretty good and I asked the Asian guy if he was on a T1….he looked at me blankly and said ‘we’re on EasyLink’.
Arriving downtown I strolled past Westminster Abbey and on to Big Ben. This area of London is actually also in the City of Westminster and is largely unpopulated.
They really go in for this decorative stuff in this neighborhood. This eagle was along the Embankment and is a tribute to the RAF in 1945 (and there’s me thinking the Queen is a Philly fan).
Across the River Thames is the other wheel of fortune. The cars move very slowly and apparently it feels like you are hardly moving.
After a quick recce into a pub I called Philip Blazdell and Lisa Elford, 2 BootsnAll members who I am looking forward to getting together with in the next few days. Philip’s in Cambridge and Lisa’s in Devon but both will be in London soon.
I managed to just miss rush hour coming back to Hertford. I took the subway (Tube) to Finsbury Park then got the British Rail overground train to Hertford North. I must say that after hearing all about the overcrowded trains, cut backs, etc., it really isn’t that bad. In fact, the transport system would be the envy of many countries, there are so many buses and trains it is incredible. The whole time I’ve been here I’ve hardly had to wait at all.
Here’s my view during this evening’s short wait at Finsbury Park station.
