BootsnAll Travel Party: November 22, 2003
By Sean | PermalinkBootsnAll Travel Party
Special Guest: Phillip Blazdell from Cambridge, England
When: November 22, 2003
What Time: 7 p.m. to ?
Where: Lucky Labrador Pub in Portland, Oregon
Why: Phillip Blazdell has been writing travel stories and guides for BootsnAll.com for almost 5 years. He is coming to Portland to meet folks that like to travel independently and drink a little bit of beer. Phillip is from England. Come for the energy that this guy gives off and have a few beers.
Other Special Guests:
Joe E: Travel Gear Blog Editor and Writer. Known for long sentences and an in depth knowledge of all things Travel Gear.
Round the World Travellers: At least 4 people that will be traveling around the world in the next year will be showing up at this party. Find out how they decided to “throw it all in and go for it”. Maybe you’ll get the inspiration to go for it as well.
Is coming now:
Jen Leo: Loud, brash Sand in her underwear travel writer Jen Leo might show up for a few beers. She is ready to challenge anyone to the loudest belch contest.
Will be there in spirit: Chris Heidrich and Nick O’Neill: BootsnAll’s Aussie Chris Heidrich will be enjoying a sunny afternoon beer in our party’s honor. Nick will go for a surf at Kuta Beach while we party down and talk travel in our memory.
Why come?: Because the weather is shitty, or will be, and hanging out with travel nutters is fun. Listen to stories, have a feed and tell a story yourself. I will also be buying Phillip close to a keg’s worth of beer to share with everyone.
Rumor: BootsnAll may be giving away some BootsnAll gear and a chance at a special prize!!
Where to stay for out of towners: Hawthorne Hostel is a few blocks away…the BootsnAll hostel is also a few blocks away but filling up fast. If there ever was a chance to make it to a BootsnAll Conference…this is it folks. Search for cheap tickets and get your arse over to Portland for a once in a lifetime event.
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday: Huge Monster trucks…I mean, we’ll be going to the Tin Shed for breakkie if you can’t make it Saturday night. Come for coffee, eggs, and Shed cakes and more travel talk and a recap of the night before.
New Addition
Just received confirmation that Lonely Planet author Sandra Bao will be attending as another special guest.
She has contributed to the following LP books.
South America, Argentina/Uruguay/Paraguy, Buenos Aires, Mexico’s Pacific Coast and Thailand. All are the current editions except for South America the new edition of which comes out sometime soon. She is currently working
on the next edition of the Mexico book and is usually one of several authors on a book.
Yahoo! - Welcome Sandra.
Another Special Guest Addition
Anthony and Liz from TravelinVan have been on the road living out of a VW Bus for almost a year. There road trip is ending up in the Northwest and they have confirmed that they will attend. Come say hi and chug a beer or two down with these folks.
Comments
Nice one Shawn…glad you will make it to the party and glad to hear the food at the Tin Shed suits you. Speaking of that…maybe I’ll go this morning…it opens in 33 minutes.
I will be there in spirit as well, unless I can ditch work for a day or 2 and find another cheap flight!! If not, I will be drinking beer and talking travel under the sun in San Diego now that the ash is settled and we can breath again….Cheers
that´s so not fair! I really really would like to be there, but no cheap flight would be enough, so… I promisse I will do a ‘flash mob’ kind of thing and get drunk by myself (meaning = with my local friends. I am not that sorrowfull, or whatever you call a lonely, travel itchy brazilian girl who´s desperatly wishing she could be in Portland for the party and to tell Philip thanks for the best travel article written on Sao Paulo I ever read).
I woulda loved to make it. It’s a stone’s throw from my place, but I’m going to be catching the first winter swells on Maui. I’ve got a bone to pick with the Boots scheduling secretary …. Enjoy. I’ll hoist a mimosa, or similar in your honor.
You forgot to mention that your old pal Francesca will be there, flying in from Chicago for the weekend.
You were mentioned in our RTW newsletter that went out today Freesia!…cu you soon.
Those of us from south of the border would like to put in a request for NO RAIN, OK?
And please: no snow going over the Siskiyous.
Myself, plus that famous woman with the sandy brassiere and my dog Mavis will be driving up.
Yahoo! - Can’t wait Joe….

I have no money to travel somewhere
I’ll be there. If things get wild, y’all may need a local lawyer to sort things out. And I am prepared to cite chapter and verse of my three round the world trips.
Nice one Jere,
Looking forward to meeting you and hearing some of your tall tales. Blazdell made need you legal expertise by the end of the night…so extra glad that you can make it.
:-)
Ack! I’ll be in NYC for their Burning Man decompression party.
What does New York City have that Portland doesn’t have?
Miguel, I think that people who have blogs without comment links shouldn’t be allowed to comment on other blogs.
Get comments.
Looks like I moved to the right city, for once! Will absolutely be there. Have floor space (carpet) in NW Port., for anyone really in need.
Nice one Dane…send me your email address so I can email you the evite.

Count me in… at least for a spell. I AM throwing my significante outre a birthday party that evening. But since I am taking off for Mexico for 3 months at the beginning of the year, I rally can’t pass this up.
BTW… I actually have a spare couch inside, one outside and another spare room for anyone that needs to crash. Be aware that there will be a big party here that evening, though… most likely going late.
Ciao,
Johnny
Since most of the out of towners are coming from California, I’m pretty sure they couldn’t handle the outside couch. They’re delicate.
By delicate you mean incredibly tough and able to wrestle mountain lions while casually drinking a sierra nevada pale ale…
I’ll be there with proverbial bells on. After doing a bit of lurking around here over the past several months, i’m chomping at the bit to meet some folks. I was/am fortunate enough to have made Sean’s aquaintence recently. Now that i’ve discovered Bootsn’all- I’m hooked.
Though I’ve just managed to get around to membership, i’m sure you’ll see me commenting much more often. Hope to see you all there !.
Very kewl - glad you can make it Caleb!
That’s exactly what I meant, Chris.
Don’t even get me started on Floridians with their walkers and bingo.;)
re: comments, from Jen Leo.
Sean’s been promising from since the Porch Wine Party to get me comments. And, I’ve tried and failed to install it on my own.
I’m so excited to hear that your hosting a party in Portland! I’ve been a member of Boots n’ all for awhile now, and it will be nice to put some faces to some names. Count me in!!!
Are faces our not all that nice.
But in print, I am a lot taller and thinner.
carpooling from the north?? also–worth it for a 20 year old to come? (grrr damn US) should have one in Vancouver, BC soon!
At least four of us are coming from California. You only have a little way to travel. Come on down!
Hi folks,
with a certain delay I send you a big kiss from Italy.
Too far for me but I will be there with the spirit.
Hoping next party will take place in Milan…..
Roberta
Hey Sean and Jen! We will be there and will be leaving our babies (doggies) behind. Can’t wait to see you and get the wedding video. Jess
YAY! I can’t wait for you to see the Tin Shed. They’re dog friendly and you’ll be bringing the pups the next time for sure. On a side note, I’m bringing the Cubans. (cigars, that is). I mean no, er, the Dominican Republic ones, Wouldn’t want the feds to shut down your part early.
Just heard about the Portland party. I’ve been running hostels in Oregon for over 20 years now. I’ll be there! It’ll be great to meet you all!
We are nearly full on Friday, but have space Saturday at Portland Hostel, Northwest, 503-241-2783.
Jim Kennett
Portland Hostel, NW & Seaside Hostel
Will drive for In-N-Out burgers.
So, I’ve got a car rental sitch worked out from the Bay Area and I’m leaving late tomorrow morn. Anyone want to have a ride to the party in exchange for a burger and some gas help?
Come on, it’ll be fun.
Jim,
Hope you can make it…it’ll be great to meet you.
Cheers
Sean & all-
I still am trying to decided if I’m going to be sick tonight. What does everyone think; do I feel the 24 hour flu bug coming on? The prospect of going to a party, meeting some cool folks, and drinking some beer sound so much more exciting than taking care of sick people. Damn, why did I just spend my money on a trip to Denver…then I wouldn’t feel so guilty about calling into work tonight. My friends think that I’m feeling sick, how about you guys?
Still deciding…I better take a nap and make my decision
Come! We’re already having a blast and it hasn’t even started yet. You don’t want to miss this….
What? I’ll be there…I guess. WHo are you?
Great to talk to Philip yesterday on my mobile here in Bali. I was in a noisy sports bar with a couple of hundred rowdy English and Aussie fans watching the rugby. Have a great party mate.
I wanna see the traveling nurses again!
Where the hell are all the photographs?
There were approximently one quadzillion of digital photos taken.
Where the heck are they?
Coming up later tonight or early manana…sorry pal.

I’ll be there. I also happen to live next door to the Hawthorne Hostel and would be happy to help out however I can with logistics on that side. It’s quite possible to do a drunken stagger between the hostel and the Lucky Lab (it’s about a 20-25 minute walk depending how much stagger is involved.)
I also hit the Tin Shed for the first time yesterday and heartily endorse Sean’s pick.
