Delhi Belly: Traveller’s Diarrhoea

Warning: This post contains explicit information about bowel movements and Diarrhoea. May not be suitable for some.

On Wednesday morning, I starting feeling some shooting pains in my belly. Every 15 to 20 minutes a sharp stabbing pain shot into my gut. I also started having more frequent and more liquid bowel movements. I made up a way to “grade” my craps. Each dump since Delhi Belly hit me is a “piler” - meaning number of piles of crap and flushes.

So, this morning, I had a 6 piler. That means 6 piles of crap and 6 flushes. Most of my Delhi Belly craps ranged from 2 to 5 pilers. I hit 6 once at the peak of it all.

Suchi saw me doubled over a few times and started feeding me curd, cumin, bananas and some drugs to get the bug squashed and me plugged up. She was very helpful.

Update: Saturday morning I am almost back to normal. Just a little 2 piler this morning and all is good. Thanks Suchi and family!

Travel Tip: Don’t do what I did. I drank water (it was filtered) at Suchi’s house. I simply forgot and just went with the flow of the situation. The first time I travelled overseas to the 3rd world, I was a panic merchant and stayed virtually sick-free the whole time…this time, I got lazy and just put whatever was in front of my mouth, in it.

Delhi Belly is not so bad IMO. A few pains here and there I reckon is good for me. Keep me hungry, humble, and appreciative of the normal feeling. The good thing about this pain, is that it only lasted for about 15 - 20 seconds and then subsided…so I could feel the non-pain glory for a while after.

What was the tip again? Oh yeah - don’t drink the water…but you already knew that if you have done any research. :-)

Dude,

I would have killed for ‘pilers’ since I dispensed ‘yahoo’ from my soft serve machine for 4 days. Travel tip — beware of salad bars where the veggies have been washed in t aforementioned water.

Just got back from India and have Delhi Belly. It was the last day of my trip and I got too trusting of food and drink especially since the source of the bug was probably from a meal served on a train which looked really nice and not from the streets. I dont understand the pilers referred to. Mine is like a water shute. The pain kept me up last night for over an hour. This is the 5th day without food and I’m feeling so horrible I dont know what to do next. Waiting for test results to come back from the lab in case as the doctor put I have something ‘exotic’.
Meanwhile I’m just watching telly and watching the bathroom scales go down - the only good to come out of it…….
