3rd Annual BootsnAll Year-end Travel Party

By Sean | Permalink | 35 comments | December 3rd, 2005 | Trackback

The nitty gritty:
December 3, 2005
7 p.m. til late

Studio 1050
1050 SE Water Ave
Portland, OR

Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, as well as beer and wine.

This year we’re taking over the world - well, at least part of it. There will be some specific themes for everyone to enjoy:

1) The Bali Room: meet with Bali resident and English ex-pat Nick, and discuss surfing the awesome Bali breaks, how to be a beach bum, or how to live and work overseas. Of course, it’s also a chance to hang out with a genuinely nice bloke.

2) Africa Room: BootsnAll is leading a 30 person expedition up Mt. Kilimanjaro for New Years 2006. Come meet the trip leader and BootsnAll World Adventure specialist (and former Tanzanian ex-pat), Donovan Pacholl. He will have pictures, video and stories about travelling in East Africa, specifically Serengeti safaris and climbing Africa’s highest mountain.

3) Europe/Germany 2006 Room: the Soccer World Cup is coming up in June 2006 and BootsnAll will be in Germany for the entire event. Come meet BootsnAll founder and soccer nut Chris Heidrich. He is the managing editor of the famous World Cup Blog. For Germany 2006, Chris will be managing and editing 32 blog websites - one for each team in the cup (hopefully including Australia this time!). Come drink beer with him and figure out how to get your arse over to Germany to participate in the World’s Greatest Sport.

4) Vegas Room: www.VivaLasVegasBlog.com managing editor and world renowned travel writer, Jen Leo, will be staffing the Vegas Room. Come gamble with her and learn about some hidden secrets for your next time at the tables. Cheap eats, great gambles or even how to have the best bachelor weekend possible.

Other reasons to come if the above is not compelling enough:

1) BootsnAll members and travel nutters from all over the country and world are coming. Come meet people that you don’t know, and who actually are interested in you and your travel dreams.

2) The party will be catered by our friends from Acadia Bistro - New Orleans food at its finest. Yum.

3) Joe E. will be driving up from Berkeley to participate. Come meet the ultimate travel curmudgeon.

4) Rumor has it that Philip Blazdell, the most published BnA writer in our 7 year history, will be coming over to socialize, talk travel, and very possibly make fun of himself and others like no other Pom can.

5) BootsnAll staffer, writer, editor and solo female employee in Portland will be there. Court is obsessed with Eastern Europe. Come meet her and make fun at her attempts to speak Russian.

6) If you come, I will shake you hand and/or give you a hug. There are not enough hugs in this world.

7) Come try the unexpected…I guarantee you will be welcomed and introduced to several people you’ve never met before. If this does not happen, I’ll buy you a beer or glass of Oregon pinot noir (merlot, however, will not be allowed).

8) If you are thinking of traveling for a long period of time, come meet people that have done it, or are also thinking about doing it.

9) There will be a lot of laughing. Laughing is good for you.

10) There will be door prizes. You gotta be there to win it!

11) See the kick off our new program to help sponsor adventurers the world over and fill out a page telling us why you’re a Rogue Traveler.

My reasons for coming:

Learn from Nick how to be a bum - beach or otherwise.

Learn from Donovan how to climb Mt Kilimanjaro without actually climbing it.

Learn from Chris the intricacies, plays, secrets of aweseome soccer playing.

Learn from Jen those hidden secrets - the one I’m most interested in is how to win big with little cash outlay, in a short period of time.

Meeting other travellers and those wanting to travel will be awe-inspiring. Acadia Bistro’s food is reason enough to be at the gathering. Seeing, touching and oogling celebrities, Philip and Joe, will add glamour and excitement to an otherwise ordinary, uneventful life. And Court is energy itself! A hug is good, more than one is better. Laughing is internal aerobics. I’ll take my chances on the door prizes.

See you all December 2, oops, I mean Decemer 3. Whoa!

No, Slip, I don’t. I’ve done the have-to stuff and now I do what I want and like. Yahooooooo!

Just kidding Mary….The bash looks great. It may even top last year’s shindig. I certainly hope I get to come….

Sounds like fun. I’d come to meet other travelers, however I will be in Manila, Philippines, for their first annual salsa congress. (dancing, not sauce!) Will also be roaming around to see what’s going on elsewhere.

Ahhh… What a fabulous opportunity to mingle with other people that have the passion and drive to travel the world and explore other cultures!

Maybe I will bump into a person or two that knows something about Thailand?

Cheers!

I’m still new to BootsnAll and have never attended the year-end bash. Do I have to make any sort of RSVP?

I am also new to BootsnAll. I would love to attend the bash, but transportation may be a problem. I live in San Francisco and would like to catch a ride with someone — and help pay for all that expensive petrol! Can you advise how I might find someone to give me a lift from the Bay area?

Hey Chris-
RSVPs are not required, but we like to have a general idea of who is coming.
Rina-
The best place to ask about San Fran drivers is on the message boards - check out this thread.

That sounds great! My husband and I would love to attend - I need to pick people’s brains about their travel experiences. I’ll be the gal taking notes :)

I’m still a “maybe”… I can’t risk missing Socal’s killer salsa. The past two parties have been incredible but I think this year’s bash may top ‘em all.

Hi Ah che’!! I love getting your weekly emails and I’m sorry I won’t be seeing you at the party this year. I’ll just have to come visit you in Oz! ;-)

Is there going to be a Jamaican /rastafarian room with a 4 foot bong? Or maybe just a red light room with a coffee shop?? Just kidding…
but seriously will there be a bong?

Sara and I are travelling to Italy and Croatia next year and would love to mingle, jingle, and talk the talk. While I’m there I’ll post a blog about getting drunk on Italian wine and speeding around on a vespa with the Paparazzi. And Sean, what do you have against Merlot?

I’m not a world travelor as many of you are, however, I look forward to hearing your inspiring travel stories and meeting and mingling with all of you lovely folk. =)

At the risk of sounding redundant, I’m new to BootsnAll, and I’d love to come, but I’m pretty short on cash. Is there any kind of cover charge or anything? And are there any budget-type accomodations near by?

Joe E. | November 7th, 2005 at 6:32 pm

No cover charge per se, but if you would care to bring pastries, you wouldn’t be turned away.

As far as cheap sleeps, there are two youth hostels in Portland. That is where many of the Bootsn’All ragamuffins will be bunking.

Brian L. | November 9th, 2005 at 7:40 pm

I’ll be there.

Court, if you supply a sarong I MIGHT wear it for you ;)

I’m a new member and planning my first RTW for next spring. I live in Eugene, so I’ll definitely be making the trip up. Can’t wait to meet everyone.

Thanks so much for the invitation. I’ll be in Phoenix, not getting very far on my dream of an RTW, but still am itching to do one. Best wishes to you blokes, and I really enjoy your letter…. I was served a brew in St. Martin by a Sheila wearing only a sarong, it was ice cold, what a memory…..
