BootsnAll Bali

In this morning’s newsletter - we told the BootsnAll community that we (Nick and Chris) are gonna move to Bali in 2003 and open an office there (you know - another Garage style operation) - We have had already doznes of folks write back with varying levels of encouragement and tips.

One email was the exact opposite.

My advice to you is to abandon your plan. I have never heard such an ill prepared and ill thought out idea in all my life. What were you smoking when you typed the words “Come 2003 BootsnAll will be opening a new office in Bali” having obviously done no preparation whatsoever?

To take your last point first, there is no way of doing what you propose legally as a foreigner, period. This type of business must be owned and run by locals, and you will never ever get a work permit to staff it with foreigners. If you want to do it illegally, that of course is different……..

Not that we haven’t heard stuff like this before, mind you. While sorting through old files a few months back, Sean found comments on the original BootsnAll business plan, when he and Chris submitted it to some entreprenurial forum for review back in ‘99.

The gist of one guys comments? “a mix of innocence and ignorance” that would never work.

Sure it wouldn’t.

True Ant - but I actually appreciate the comments, both now, and the the ones from ‘99 that you referred to. Yes, they may have been wrong, but it is definately something to think about. At least try to do more research, ask more questions, further refine what we are doing so we don’t blow our small wad.

I would agree that your plan poses considerable challenges, but as you know, if you don’t try, nothing will ever happen. The complexities of starting a business is a foreign country should certainly be a big consideration. I can offer you some advice from 1st hand experience, though. When I worked as a graphic artist in Tortola, BVI, 2 of the biggest problems I encountered were multiple daily power outages and the effects of humidity and salt air on computer hard drives. I can tell ya, it was a pain in the ass.

Thanks for those additional thoughts Kate. There are always barriers like this, that are impossible to think of, without experienceing it ourselves, or getting a tip like you just gave.

Cheers
