New York in the Rain
My seat on the flight from Seattle to Newark was right at the very back. The plane was full so I guess I was lucky to get on and not have to wait for the next one at 1pm. I powered through most of a new book I started reading – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
I thought I would try to get to my hotel in mid-town Mahattan using public transportation, just to see how easy it was. I’d done about 30 minutes research before I left so I had a vague idea of what I needed to do. It ended up going pretty smoothly right up until I exited the subway station at Times Square.
It was pouring rain. Not light rain either. It was like a thunderstorm back in Queensland. I had debated whether to bring a rain jacket before I left and decided against the weight considering the weather report for the weekend was light showers and cloudy – no mention of thunderstorms! At least I packed a light rain breaker so I was able to protect the laptop as I started walking the 5 blocks to the hotel.
I was drenched by the time I arrived and at the moment my clothes are hanging up around my room, hopefully drying before I need to wear them. Not so bad, just a few damp places.
Heading out now to find something to eat.
Update @ 10pm: Found my way to the Ginger Man pub on 36th St on a strong recommendation from MK. Pretty good sandwich and a tasty pint of Harviestoun Ptarmigan. On the way back I snapped a pic or two of some big buildings.

Rain with attitude.
Unless it burned a bald spot on the top of my head, it sure felt like any other rain – oh wait, that was already there.
Whatever it was, it was coming down hard and without much easing into it. One minute it wasn’t raining, the next minute it was gushing rivers in the gutters. And through it all, there were entreprenurial NY’ers out there selling umbrellas to the under-prepared.
That’s good, Joe. And you can count on those New Yorkers to take advantage of every situation – even bald spots.
are you still in NY for the weekend? why no BnA shindig?
I am in town 4 the w’end. No shindig planned cos I was lazy
But if you wanted to meet up, send me an email and we’ll figure it out.

I heard New York rain is different from any other city. Is that true?
